About Ohlhoff Recovery Programs

★★★★★ 5.0/5 Rating on Google

Ohlhoff Recovery Programs is a nonprofit addiction treatment provider based in the Alamo Square area of San Francisco, California. It began in 1958 as Henry Ohlhoff House, a live-in program for working men recovering from alcoholism. Its main campus is still a historic Victorian home on Steiner Street.

Today the organization offers drug and alcohol rehab in San Francisco for adult men and women at several levels of care. The Skip Byron Primary Program is a 30-day inpatient stay. Longer residential programs for men and for women last about three to six months and are built for people who work or go to school during the day. Ohlhoff also runs an intensive outpatient program, a standard outpatient group, and continuing care for people who want ongoing support.

Treatment Services at Ohlhoff Recovery Programs

Primary Inpatient Program
The Skip Byron Primary Program is a stay of up to 30 days with 24-hour living on campus. Men and women take part in daily peer groups, individual counseling, education, relapse prevention, and weekly family groups. Clients should be medically stable, and an eight-week IOP is offered as a next step.
Long-Term Residential Care
Ohlhoff runs a men's program at the historic Henry Ohlhoff House and a separate women's program, each lasting about three to six months. Residents hold jobs, school, or volunteer roles during the day and attend evening and weekend groups, individual sessions, drug testing, and 12-step meetings.
Outpatient & Continuing Care
The 12-week intensive outpatient program meets three evenings a week, with weekly individual sessions and drug screening. After IOP, clients can move to a weekly outpatient group and then continuing care. Individual, couple, and family counseling is also offered through the outpatient team. Weekly on-site drug screening continues at each step.

Ohlhoff Recovery Programs at a Glance

Ohlhoff focuses on alcohol and drug use disorders. Its programs are open to adults who are medically stable and ready to take part in a structured, sober setting. The center says it can refer clients to dual diagnosis services when a mental health condition also needs care, and outpatient staff include licensed mental health professionals.

Treatment follows a social model with a strong 12-step base. In the Skip Byron Primary Program, clients have individual counseling, daily peer process groups, education groups, relapse prevention work, and trauma-informed care. Medication-assisted treatment is available through a licensed provider. The outpatient program lists dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), narrative and somatic therapy, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention.

The setting is a key part of the Ohlhoff story. The Henry Ohlhoff House campus sits near Alamo Square, one of San Francisco's best-known historic neighborhoods. It is a home-style residence rather than a resort, so the focus is on structure, routine, and peer support. Residents follow house rules, take random drug tests, and attend outside 12-step meetings.

Families are included in several ways. The primary program has a weekly family group, and the outpatient team offers individual, couple, and family counseling. Ohlhoff also lists family support services, court-requested assessments, and adolescent services under its flexible support options.

The residential programs are a good fit for working adults. The men's program at Henry Ohlhoff House and the separate women's recovery program expect clients to work, study, or volunteer at least 32 hours a week, with treatment in the evenings and on weekends. This makes Ohlhoff a distinct option among drug and alcohol rehab in San Francisco for people who need to keep a job. The 12-week IOP meets three evenings a week.

Ohlhoff accepts most major private insurance plans. The center names Blue Shield, Aetna, Health Net, Magellan, Cigna, Anthem, Beacon, and Teamsters plans, and private payment is also an option. It does not accept Medi-Cal or Medicare. Benefits differ, so families should verify coverage before admission. Ohlhoff holds California Department of Health Care Services licenses for residential (380013AN) and outpatient (380013CN) care. We did not find a Joint Commission or CARF accreditation.

For people researching residential rehab in San Francisco with a long-standing nonprofit, Ohlhoff Recovery Programs offers inpatient, residential, and outpatient care in one network. Calling the admissions team is the best way to ask about openings, eligibility, and insurance.
