What is Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drug addiction — also known as prescription drug use disorder — is a chronic, relapsing disease in which a person becomes dependent on prescribed medications, resulting in compulsive drug-seeking and use even though it causes harm. It often starts with a legitimate medical need, but it can evolve into dependence and abuse/overuse when medications are taken at higher or more frequent doses than prescribed or without a prescription altogether.

This addiction is particularly concerning because the substances have a medical use and are often thought of as “safe.” But when abused, they can be just as addictive and ruinous as illegal drugs.

Most Commonly Abused Prescription Drug Categories:

  • Opioids: Prescribed widely for pain, but highly addictive. Some of the most familiar drugs that fit this category include Oxycodone (which is more commonly known as OxyContin), Hydrocodone (Vicodin), Morphine, and Fentanyl. It can cause respiratory depression, overdose, and death when abused.

  • Benzodiazepines: Prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. Medicines, such as Xanax, Valium and Ativan, can develop quick tolerance and cause physical and emotional dependency.
  • Stimulants: Usually directed to individuals who have narcolepsy and ADHD. Drugs like Adderall, Ritalin and Dexedrine are often abused for their energy-boosting and concentration-enhancing effects.
  • Sleep Medications: Drugs like Ambien and Lunesta can be habituating with long-term or off-label use.

All of these drug types are highly addictive and often abused, particularly when not taken under the care of a physician. Knowing what types of prescription drugs are being abused is the first step in seeking the right treatment and starting down the path to recovery.

How do you know if you are addicted to prescription drugs

Most of the time, prescription drug abuse is hard to recognize in the beginning, as people may take prescriptions for medical reasons, or they start because of peer pressure, or they feel they cannot handle the stress. But over time, misuse can result in addiction and dependence. Knowing the warning signs can be the first step to getting help before the addiction spirals out of control.
